Iodine is an essential mineral - meaning you have to get it from your diet. Iodine:

The thyroid gland uses iodine to produce thyroid hormones that have many important responsibilities in your body including growth, repairing damaged cells, and supporting a healthy metabolism.
The recommended daily intake of iodine is 150 mcg per day for most adults. For women who are pregnant or nursing, the requirements are higher. Iodine deficiency is common throughout the world and an estimated one-third of the population is at risk.
Iodine deficiency can lead to swelling of the thyroid gland, known as goiter, and hypothyroidism, which can cause fatigue, muscle weakness, and weight gain.
Those who are considered at the highest risk include:

• Pregnant women.
• People who live in countries where there is very little iodine in the soil. This includes Asia, New Zealand, and European countries.
• People who don’t use iodized salt.
• People who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet.
